Warwickshire Open

Chess was known as the royal game, the game of kings, so what better place to do battle with your army on the chess board than in Warwickshire - the ancient seat of the Earl of Warwick and 'Kingmaker'.

Indeed, aside from the congress, you could take the opportunity to visit several other places in Warwickshire.

There's Stratford-upon-Avon, William Shakespeare's birthplace and home town.

Or visit the finest medieval castle in all of England - Warwick Castle - originally built by William the Conqueror no less!

Alternatively you could visit the Bull Ring in Birmingham to shop in one of Europe's newest and best shopping experiences.

Warwickshire Open Chess Congress 2010

An ECF Grand Prix and Game Fee event and a British Chess Championships 2010 Qualifying Tournament.

Sponsored by Honeygold Caterers

Warwickshire Chess Association's annual chess congress is a popular event attracting chess players from across the land.  At last year's event, we again welcomed GM Keith Arkell, the 2008 English Chess Champion!

This year's Warwickshire Open retains a guaranteed prize fund and the highest qualifier (not yet qualified) will be offered a place to play in the forthcoming British Chess Championships 2010 in Canterbury.

We will have the usual range of sections to accommodate players at all levels of chess playing ability: Open, U175, U150 and U125.  And to ensure you have everything at hand to further add to your enjoyment of the congress, we will have the usual facilities including a bookstall by Gareth Ellis, and refreshments with hot and cold food by Honeygold Caterers.

Entry Form with Contact Details of the Congress Director, John Pakenham:

We look forward to welcoming you and wish you good luck!

Report

Like last year, this year's Warwickshire Open was played over a bright February weekend, in the attractive and locally sought after village of Knowle.

With prizes amounting to 1,745 pounds plus titles and a place in the British Chess Championships, this year's congress attracted 107 entries.  Numbers across the sections were twenty-one in the Open, thirty in the Under 175, twenty four in the Under 150, and thirty-two in the Under 125.

The Open was closely fought, with John Naylor (Rugby) and David Coates (Lincoln) tying with 4/5 for first place, closely followed by Brandon Clarke (Littlethorpe) on 3.5.  The fight for victory went down to the line, with the last round seeing John and Brandon playing against each other - great for those spectating!

The U175 was equally close, with Simon Smith (Warley Quinborne) taking first with 4.5/5, followed by Golam Ali (Sutton Coldfield) and Henry Brockbank (Olton) on 4.

The U150 saw Keith Jewsbury (Solihull) finish a clear point ahead of the field on 4.5/5 to take a well deserved first prize.  The battle for second place was much tougher, with Mike Maher (Lichfield), Louis Rawson (Shirley & Lucas) and Ian Brodie (Solihull) finishing on 3.5.

The U125 was set on fire by John-Paul Taylor (Warwick Uni) - the only person in the congress to obtain a perfect score of 5/5 - who won a very well deserved first prize in the U125 section.  Even more astonishing is that his grade is only 85!!  Clearly someone to watch!  Snapping at his heels though were Andrew Sutton (Nottingham Central) on 4.5 to take second, along with James Mendes (Rugby) and Andrew Pearson (Solihull) on 4 sharing third.

Grading prizes were scooped up by Richard Smith and Tomasz Sygnowski in the Open, Tony Sadler in the U175, Paul Hardstaff in the U150 and Paul Munro in the U125.

The team event also proved to be popular, with no less than 10 teams battling it out for team honours!  Solihull emerging as the clear winners with 15.5 points, 2 points ahead of Warwickshire Select.  It was good to see two schools from Warwickshire - King Edward VI Camp Hill and King Edward VI Five Ways - entering and getting some valuable experience.  With Camp Hill being beaten by Five Ways, this will I'm sure lead to a fight for revenge at next year's congress!

Indeed it is great to report that a total of sixteen juniors took part this year, that's 14% of those who played - and nine were from Warwickshire.  There would have been even more, as some who entered last year didn't play this time due to a major junior event clashing on the same weekend.  There were three juniors in the Open, three in the U175, two in the U150 and eight in the U125.

In addition to the sixteen juniors, there were three players from local universities.

With many thanks to all involved in organising, running, and providing essential services on the day.

Warwickshire Chess Association looks forward to welcoming you again next year.  There is room for more in the playing hall, so please do invite your friends and fellow club members to next year's event on 12-13 February 2011.  Keep an eye on the Calendar for more details as they become available.

Prizewinners

Cash prizes totalling 1,745 pounds, plus the title of Warwickshire Champion 2010, the Tucker Trophy, and a place in the British Championships 2010, were presented by the President of the Warwickshire Chess Association, Dave Thomas.

Next year's congress will be held on 12-13 February 2011.  The Warwickshire Open is a British Championships Qualifying Tournament.  Keep an eye on the Calendar for more details as they become available.  Also it would be good to see a few more entrants next time, so please invite your friends and fellow club members.

Apologies, I do not have any tournament software, so these are the tournament sheets sorted into order by hand.  Therefore following the round results is not quite as easy as it could be, since they refer to the tourney numbers not finish positions.  However I feel this is better than nothing if you want to see the individual round results.

Games

Click here to visit the Analysis Area featuring several games from the congress.  With thanks to David Coates (Open), Brandon Clarke (Open), Philip Holt (Open), Simon Smith (U175) and Trevor Holt (U175) for presenting games for publishing.

If you have an interesting game from the congress that you'd like to be published - not just from the Open section but from all sections - as I'm sure your peers would love to play through some games!  Please  and attach the game as a PGN (or alternatively a CBV Chessbase Archive or Chessmaster) file.
