Staffordshire, under David Anderton’s captaincy, put out as expected, a very strong team.  It was evident from the start that we had a tough match ahead.  In fact Staffordshire won 10½ to 5½.  The match was played in a good spirit with many familiar faces, with both teams comprised largely of players from the Birmingham League.

Our sole winner and Warwickshire’s most outstanding player of late, Tony Hynes, beat Darren Wheeler. Tony was black and skilfully defended an exchange Ruy Lopez.  I’ve asked Tony to forward the game for inclusion here on the Warwickshire Chess Association website.

Alan Lloyd, another Warwickshire stalwart, played well to get a draw in an interesting rook, bishop, and pawns versus rook, knight and pawns endgame that went on to near the end of our tough five-hour match.  Playing on board 1, Richard Weaving got a draw against IM Lawrence Cooper who both had rook, pawns and opposite coloured bishop.  In my own game against Nick Walker I let him off the hook by playing a flashy combination that only led to a level position (and therefore a draw) instead of turning the screw to get an overwhelming position.  Mike Doran and Jon Turner who were debuting for the first team claimed draws against much higher graded players.  There were also draws for Nick Roberts, Ann-Marie James, Mark Cundy and Ed Goodwin.

I should like to thank Richard and Robert Reynolds of Olton Chess Club who let us use their venue and who gave a tremendous amount of logistical support.  Thanks also to David Brelsforth who provided refreshments to both his own team (who were playing a U140 county match) as well as to our team.

Despite our loss we shall still go on to the National Championship.

Scores and Captain's Report

Simon reports that Nottinghamshire unfortunately had to default the match as they were unable to raise more than about 9 players.  Hence Warwickshire win on default.

Warwickshire won 11½ to 4½ as Greater Manchester defaulted four boards, and there were more biscuits to go around for the rest of the players at the very accommodating Newcastle-under-Lyme Bridge club.  Unfortunately there had been a horrendous traffic jam coming south from Manchester and one of their cars overheated in the gridlock - something that of course could have happened to any of our players - but on this occasion it didn’t.

Along with the regular players we welcomed Ryszard Maciol on board one who made his debut for the county, and Richard Weaving on board two who debuted for the county a few years back on board 16!

Looking back at previous captain’s reports, there’s no way I can emulate Joey Stewart's fantastic game-by-game analysis.  However I have invited our winning players to forward their games in PGN format for possible inclusion on the Warwickshire Chess Association website.

There were wins for: Richard Weaving, Tony Hynes, Keith Escott, Tony Green and Ed Goodwin.

A big thanks to Francis Day of the Bridge Club who set everything up perfectly, as she has done on many other occasions.  Thanks also to our players (Philip Holt, Alan Lloyd and Gary Hope) who turned up and didn’t get a game.
